This actually made the news a while back and the papers just rolled with the idea that Mr. Junker said he’s had contact with aliens. It was likely he said that he was talking to leaders of other countries but the translators (French-speakers interpreting into English) heard him say planets.
He was speaking French, but not fluent French because Mr. Junker is more used to speaking Luxembourgish. The French word for countries is des pays but their word for planets is planètes. So he might have gotten the two mixed up. Saying “J'ai vu et entendu et écouté plusieurs des dirigeants d'autres planètes” instead of “J'ai vu et entendu et écouté plusieurs des dirigeants d'autres des pays.”
Which for clarification translates to “I saw and heard and listened to several of the leaders of other planets/countries.”
As if to add to the confusion, the Luxembourgish word for “countries” is länner. if he confused the two and thought he said something like “paylänner” it kind of sounds like planètes.
