The attacker, codenamed Abu Mohammed Horasani Abdulkavi, was born in Uzbekistan in 1983, Governor Vasip Şahin told a press conference, adding that he was trained as a militant in Afghanistan.
Masharipov likely entered Turkey illegally from an eastern province in January 2016, Şahin said.
He also stated that "it is clear that [Masharipov] staged the attack on behalf of DAESH,"using the Arabic acronym for the jihadist group.
Masharipov had confessed the attack and his fingerprints matched those found at the scene, the governor said.
A total of $197.000 in cash, two guns and two drones were also seized during the operation, Şahin added.
Along with Masharipov, "one Iraqi-origin man and three women of Egyptian and African origin" were also detained, he said.
The joint operation was conducted with the participation of 2,000 police officers with the help of police in the provinces of Konya, Hatay and İzmir, Şahin said, adding that around 7,200 hours of surveillance camera footage have been examined in the investigation.
Masharipov first rented a house in the Başakşehir district of Istanbul before moving to other residences up until the day of the attack, Şahin stated.
Over the course of the investigation, police conducted raids at 152 addresses and 50 suspects were detained, he added.
Some 2,200 tipoffs were also delivered to police, he said.
“The police investigated five different addresses on Monday and in the afternoon they intensified the operation and caught him at one of those addresses,” Şahin said.
Late on Jan. 16, Masparipov was caught at a luxurious apartment in the district.
He was reportedly trying to hide under the bed when police raided the house, in which the suspects had resided for some time.
The attacker has been taken for health checks.
After apprehending Masharipov and the others, police also conducted a six-hour inspection inside the house.
Meanwhile, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Jan. 17 that the gunman was a manifestation of a security concept that makes everyone pay for their actions within the rule of law.
“In this country, no one will get away with what they have done,” said Erdoğan, thanking government officials and security forces for their efforts to capture Masharipov.
The mass shooting at the Reina nightclub in Istanbul’s Ortaköy neighborhood early on Jan. 1 was carried out professionally with the involvement of an intelligence organization, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmuş said Jan. 16.
On Jan 15, police reportedly determined a house in Silivri which was used by Masharipov.
Police raided the address and found 150,000 dollars in the house on Jan. 15. Police also said the money was to be given to Masharipov but that he was unable to obtain the money due to the intense police hunt.
Masharipov allegedly slipped through a police cordon after the attack before going to a house in Istanbul’s Zeytinburnu district, taking his son and escaping, according to sources.
